A straight line

In geometry a line is a straight curve, how odd that may sound. Technically a straight line is the closest route possible between two points. If you’re in A right now, and want to get to B, choosing a straight line way is your best option apparently. If you are here, and want to get there, if you are here and want that then you’d better just press the pedal to the metal and run straight forward. Eventually you’ll get there. Full speed ahead. Or not. The important is to go straight ahead.
How cool it would be if real life would religiously follow the teachings of science? Maybe it would be more easy.
“That’s really where your problem is Alec”, said Peter. “You want something and you tend to go ahead to get it. And that may be very fine and well…but life isn’t always about math.”
Alec stared at his friend while sipping quietly his cup of coffee. “What do you mean?” he asked carefully.
“Well”, replied Peter, “It’s quite simple and obvious. Take shortcuts man!!” Sometimes taking a shortcut here and there, instead of going straight ahead might improve your goal achieving ratio. Just imagine driving through a road, a straight road, with your final destination in sight. This said road is packed with cars. Why not take a turn and proceed through a few back streets and alleys in order to get there quicker?”
Alec laughed amused. “That is indeed a very sound advice my friend! But the same way life isn't always about math, as you said, i would dare to say that it isn’t at all like the goddamn traffic!” And he laughed even more.
“That may be Alec.
But i was just trying to illustrate what i was saying in the simpler way i could remember. And if you wanna know really, i DO believe that life has a lot in common with traffic….both can be puzzling, tiring and extremely hard to understand in a logical way. Both have a great deal of random stuff happening all the time. Stuff one can’t really predict!”
Alec laughed at his friend’s quick and witty remark.
“True, true. I must concede there. Well, anyway, i did understand what you were saying. Shortcuts damnit. Yes, shortcuts. But you know of course what’s the real weak point in that theory?”
“Hmmm….no, but i’m sure my distinguished colleague will enlighten me in just a few seconds…”
said a bemused Peter, while eating a handful of pretzels.
“Yes, my dear Dr. Peter MacAllister, PHD, i will. Shortcuts are essential. Indeed. The main problem is how to recognize them. And, after recognizing them, knowing how to use them effectively. That is our main problem. Or maybe mine, i don’t know. The fact is that many times in life something do tell us to use a shortcut, but the real drama of Man is not knowing when, where or how. Sometimes the answer may be simple, but for who's deep in the thick of it it's hard to recognize it. It's one of the hardest tasks one has ahead... QED my dear colleague."
“Well, Dr. Alec Turner PHD and whatnot….you may be on to something there. Do you think we can postulate some sort of equation to solve that predicament”?
Alec smiled enigmatically….”I’d say that would be close to discover something like the Meaning of Life.”
“Better not then” joked Peter, "someone might kills us after discovering such sacred secrets. Come on, let’s take a shortcut out of here. The conference will restart soon”.
